Meet Abdul, a Moringa Enthusiast from Jordan

Celebrate Moringa – Day 3

Today we go to Jordan and meet with Abdul Kareem, who has a contagious passion for Moringa. In just 6 years, Abdul has become a Moringa “super spreader”, all for the love of moringa.

Once he discovered the many benefits of the Moringa Tree, Abdul has made it his life mission to introduce people to moringa, encourage them to grow it in their gardens, and also promote moringa products.

We thank you Abdul for your enthusiasm, and we are grateful that AMH has played a part in your moringa journey. We pray that others may catch your passion.

If you want to contact Abdul, his details are at the end of this article.

Moringa Discovery

My journey with the Moringa tree began at the beginning of 2015 when a friend visited me congratulating me on my new home and presenting me with two Moringa seedlings.

At that time, I did not know anything about Moringa. My friend gave me a brief about Moringa tree, its homeland, its origin, its benefits and uses, and the most thing that caught my attention and interest was that every part of Moringa tree is useful as an integrated healthy food.

The seedling became a big tree, reaching 10 meters high within 6 years, and it produced leaves, flowers, pods, and seeds, and I used moringa as food. The journey of exploring Moringa began in-depth.

You can watch his story below in Arabic and English.

The Moringa Journey Begins

Moringa exploration journey was in several stages, starting with following YouTube and channels explaining about Moringa and how it is planted, and cared for, then joining groups specialized in Moringa trees on Facebook, and at this stage, I created a good database about Moringa trees, but something says I still need more. My exploration of Moringa continued until I had the first harvest of moringa tree pods. It was a very great joy and great pleasure because I began to reap what I sowed, and a new stage began with moringa.

The 9th of August 2021 was the most important transformation in my story with Moringa. That day I prepared a cup of Moringa tea and published a short post about the benefits of Moringa tea with a picture. I found a great interaction, and comments were received asking about this drink and its benefits and questions about the tree. Then I started to publish articles and publications about my relationship with Moringa. It was the ignition.

I designed a page on Facebook and named it the miracle tree in relation to the moringa tree. This coincided with getting to know Mariana Price. I became a member of the Africa Moringa Hub, and I realized the extent of these people’s commitment to the moringa tree and their keenness to spread knowledge, education, and training on everything related to the moringa tree.

Sharing Moringa Love

Starting from this stage, I had realized my obligation and duty, which is what I learned and realized about Moringa that I must share with people, and what I loved for myself is to love it for others, so I launched the “#plant it in your garden” initiative, which had three main goals:

  1. Introducing people to the moringa tree and its benefits for public health, and using it as food. This was done through publications, articles, and photos, and the translation of some research and studies into Arabic.
  2. Encouraging people to grow it in their gardens, educating and training them to grow and care for it. This was done by conducting field tours in various regions in response to those who requested planting moringa, or by giving some seeds or seedlings and planting them by themselves. Educative videos were filmed on how to grow Moringa from seeds or seedlings.
  3. Promote moringa tree products by promoting some followers’ sites specialized in selling Moringa products, and giving the opportunity to promote on my page.

Marvellous Moringa Results

The “plant it in your house” campaign had positive results that encouraged me to give more and develop and improve the work. The most important of these results are:

  1. Increasing people’s knowledge of the Moringa tree by publishing articles and videos on the Facebook page and various pages interested in Moringa.
  2. Hundreds of seeds and seedlings were planted in the home gardens of those who requested planting them through their communication and follow-up page.
  3. A number of followers started planting them on the roofs of their homes after consulting us and providing them with the necessary advice.
  4. A number of science students decided to devote their academic research, such as masters and doctoral studies, to the moringa tree.
  5. A number of businessmen also decided to invest in the cultivation of moringa tree by planting wide areas with Moringa.
  6. On my personal level, every area in my backyard is suitable for cultivation. I planted it with moringa trees. Now I have about 40 Moringa trees. Some of them still young.
  7. I distributed Moringa seedlings and seeds to all my close neighbors, and friends.

What’s Next? – Moringa Goals

I have a firm desire to expand the circle of knowledge of Moringa to increase the number of Moringa trees planted in my country and my city through:

  1. Work to plant 1500 Moringa trees (seeds or seedlings) during the next year by communicating with the owners of community initiatives and coordinating with them to launch introductory initiatives on Moringa and arranging campaigns to plant Moringa seedlings in various places such as schools, universities, and public parks, especially as we are going to An official celebration day on the occasion of Arbor Day, which Jordan celebrates annually by planting many trees in various regions.
  2. Establishing a special group of farmers, interested people and specialists in the Moringa tree in the Arab world with the aim of expanding the circle of knowledge of the tree and increasing the number of Moringa trees planted in the Arab world.
  3. Providing support and advice to everyone who decided to plant moringa in large areas by conducting field visits to follow up on the development of the tree’s growth.
  4. Serious work must be done to secure supporters and financiers for the initiative to increase the chances of its success and achieve its goals, by communicating with official or private bodies to secure the initiative’s requirements such as seedlings and seeds.

What we need:

We want scientists, researchers, and experts in the fields of agriculture, health, and marketing to provide us with a vision about the future of Moringa for at least ten years to come.

To reassure the farmer that his crop will be marketed and to reassure the merchant that his goods will find markets. This is a very important point for the future of Moringa

Information and data related to the benefits of Moringa and the readings of nutrients are different, and sometimes they seem conflicting. Specialists may realize the reasons for the conflict, but the general public does not realize them, and therefore it may be a reason for people to question the validity of the data and the credibility of the data.

My campaign aims to introduce people to the Moringa tree and its benefits to health and the environment, and invite people and encourage them to plant it in their gardens, and then market and promote Moringa products. The project is still in the first two points.
